The Belt and Road Initiative is referred to as the new Silk Road. China's aim for this development strategy is to connect and enhance cooperation between the Asian, European and African continents, but the initiative is open to all countries.

The initiative promotes economic development, efficient resource allocation and integrating markets with enhanced connectivity. During the past years the main focus areas have been infrastructure investment, construction materials, railway and highway, automobile, real estate, power grid, and iron and steel.
